A friend, Neil Parkin, showed me this nifty tool called doodle.com. It’s a great for scheduling a meeting, especially when 3 or more people are involved. It was recently re-designed in November of 2008 with new features, but it kept its simple look and feel. Best of all, it’s still 100% free. It’s supported by advertising. Doodle solves a fundamental problem: how to schedule a meeting quickly without going crazy with phone calls or email, and does it with a very nice web-based interface which seems to work equally well on just about any operating system or browser. I’ve used it countless times to schedule meetings, as a sign-up sheet, and a quick poll.

In some ways, it’s like Evite, but more utilitarian, and much faster. While Evite is great if you know exactly when the party is, Doodle lets people vote on when it takes place. Also, don’t use evite to send to a mailing list, it really messes things up for the responders. Doodle has no such limits and is perfect for organizing large groups on mailing lists.

Doodle sets up a mini web page with a sign-up sheet and let’s the potential attendees vote on when they can make it.

It’s fast, easy to use and saves wading through tons of emails about who can make it when.

Here is a quick tutorial on how to use Doodle. But you really don’t need one it’s so simple.

First, describe your meeting by typing in the provided box.

If you like, you can be notified every time someone places a response by providing your email address. The next step is to select which potential dates the event might take place on.

Then add in the times for each date.

Then click on the finish button, and you can email participants a link. From there they can cast their vote.

Doodle counts up the votes for you and the results can be exported into a spreadsheet if you like.

Doodle can also be used as a polling tool, and other options can be used to limit the number of people participating, limiting responses, etc. It’s one of those great tools that make life easier.
